Number of nouns with definition and examples - singular and plural - English dictionary

 Basically there are 2 number of noun :-



1) Singular noun

2) Plural noun


1) Singular noun :-

A noun standing for one person, animal, place or thing is said to be in singular noun. 

Ex :- cow, cat, ox, boy, girl, pen, milk and etc. 

2) Plural noun :-

A noun standing for more than one person, animal, place, or a thing is said to be in the plural noun. 

Ex :- cows, cats, oxen, boys, girls, pens and etc. 

Note :- Note: Countable Nouns have Plural Forms, whereas Proper Nouns and Uncountable Nouns do not have Plural Forms in the general sense.


Transformation of singular noun to plural noun :-

Rule 1 :-  Most Singular Nouns are made plural by adding -s to their end.  

Ex :- boy - boys ; egg - eggs ; cow - cows ; pen - pens and etc. 


Rule 2 :- In which singular noun's ending is ch, she, ss, s, x in that case after adding es the word becomes a plural noun. 

Ex :- bench - benches ; ass - asses ; fish - fishes ; tax - taxes and etc. 

Note :-When ch is pronounced ' k ' , then - s added, as in stomach ( R ) -stomachs , monarch -monarchs . 


Rule 3 :- When y is at the end of Noun and there is a Vowel before y, then only -s is added to make Plural.  

Ex :- boy - boys ; key - keys ; essay - essays ; way - ways and etc. 


Rule 4 :- When y is at the end of Noun and there is a Consonant before y, then Plural is made by removing y and adding -ies instead.  

Ex :- baby - babies ; fly - flies ; copy - copies ; city - cities and etc. 


Rule 5 :- Rules When fe or f is at the end of a Noun, then f/fe is changed to v and - is added to make it plural.  

Ex :- wife - wives ; life - lifes ; leaf - leaves ; half - halves and etc. 

Note :- This rule have some exceptional words. 

Ex :- chief - chiefs ; proof - proofs ; cliff - cliffs ; dwarf - dwarfs ; roofs - roofs ; gulf - gulfs ; hoof - hoofs ; safe - safes. 


Rule 6 :- When ' o ' is at the end of the Noun and there is a Consonant before the ' o ', the Plural is made by adding it.

Ex :- hero - heroes ; cargo - cargoes ; echo - echoes ; negro - negroes and etc. 

Note :- This rule have some exceptional words. 

Ex :- photo - photos ; piano - pianos ; zero - zeros. 


Rule 7 :- Rule 7. When ' o ' is at the end of Noun and ' o ' is preceded by a/ e /I /o / u, then -s is added to make Plural.  

Ex :- radio - radios ; studio - studios and etc. 


Rule 8 :- Plurals of some Nouns are formed in a different way. 

Ex :- man - men ; tooth - teeth and etc. 


Rule 9 :- There are some Nouns which have the same Singular and Plural form. 

Ex :- deer - deer ; swine - swine. 


Rule 10 :-Plurals of Compound Nouns are often their main words.  It is made by making plurals. 

Ex :- son - in - law   --  sons - in - law and  etc. 


Rule 11 :- Plurals of the desired words are made by making both the parts of some Compound Nouns plural.  The primacy of both the parts of such nouns is equal. 

Ex :- manservant - manservants and etc. 


Rule 12 :- There are some Nouns which are used only in Plural Number.

Ex :- scissors ; tongs ; cards ; scales and etc. 


Rule 13 :- There are some Nouns which are used only in Singular Number.  

Ex :- furniture ; poetry ; scenery ; advice and etc.
